In her first month as Executive Director, Elyse has spent her time listening deeply to the stories, dreams, and history that make Camp Joy so impactful. From meeting campers and staff to reconnecting with alumni and board members, she’s discovered what many already know: Camp Joy is more than a camp—it’s a spirit that changes lives.

A 30-Day Reflection

In my first month at Camp Joy, I’ve done a lot of listening to participants, staff, alumni, board members, external partners, and an ever-present soundtrack of our visiting cicada brood. Across every conversation, two themes keep rising to the surface. First: Camp Joy changes lives. Staff have met lifelong friends and even spouses here. Past participants speak about discovering their voice and confidence through their experiences. Many hold vivid memories that reach back through the decades.

Second: Once you’ve been a part of Camp Joy, you never really leave. A few weeks ago, I had the honor of meeting Joy’s very first camper, Frank Wetenkamp, now 99 years old, who visited us during my first week. Eighty-eight years after his Camp Joy experience, he still carries the impact and detailed stories with him which he is glad to share with anyone who asks! I have met many other past leaders and board members of the organization who carry their love for Joy with them even after their tenure has ended.

It is clear to me that while Camp Joy is a physical place, it is also a spirit. This spirit is fluid and alive, moving from place to place with each person who carries the Joy spark. I am so honored to steward that spark and spirit into the next chapter for Camp Joy.

With gratitude,
Elyse Lohrbach
Executive Director, Camp Joy

As we look ahead, we’re excited to continue this journey with Elyse and with each of you who make up the Camp Joy community. Thank you for sharing your stories, your support, and your belief in the power of camp to change lives. Together, we will continue to carry the spirit of Joy forward, ensuring every camper has the chance to discover confidence, connection, and the joy that lasts a lifetime.
