Challenge By Choice

Ayanna

Through the support of her friends, 12 year old Ayanna was able to conquer her fear of heights and learn the importance of team work. A first time camper and member of Boys and Girls Club of Newport, Kentucky, Ayanna had never experienced Camp Joy’s Polaris ropes course. Ayanna attributes her success on the course to her fellow campers: “I felt challenged but moved past my fear of heights by telling myself I could do it and the support of my friends helped a lot too”.

The “challenge by choice” motto at Camp Joy allows campers like Ayanna to take responsibility for themselves and decide whether or not they want to step out of their comfort zone and be challenged by new opportunities. By taking the chance on the ropes course, Ayanna’s confidence improved. Such confidence inspired her to try and succeed at other camp activities like archery and mountain biking!

Ayanna’s confidence was contagious– soon she began encouraging her fellow campers during challenging times: “I knew that they could do it and they could overcome their fears as well”. These simple acts of encouragement contribute to the building of life long character, a strong nexus between the values of Camp Joy and the Boys and Girls Club.
